Spring Cleaning Before a Move – The Benefits, Tips and Tricks

Spring cleaning is one of the best things you can do to declutter your home and prepare for your move

Springtime is one of the most popular times of the year for moving. The weather isn’t too hot or cold, and you can avoid the summer rush and higher prices. One of the best parts of moving in the spring is the opportunity to do a good, thorough spring cleaning before your move. There are a lot of benefits of spring cleaning before a move, and we’ve put together some tips and tricks to make the process efficient and productive.

Declutter and downsize as much as possible

The most significant benefit of spring cleaning is the opportunity to declutter and downsize. We gather more items during the winter months and over the holidays and receive more gifts. Springtime is the perfect time to sort through all of the new things we’ve accumulated and get rid of what we no longer need. Relocating can get very expensive, but the less you have to move, the more money you can save.

Start early

The entire purpose of spring cleaning is to give some extra tender love and care to your home that you wouldn’t typically give it. Doing a thorough, deep clean of your home will take time. Start as far in advance as you can; there are extensive cleaning lists online that you can follow as a guide. If you try to tackle all of your cleaning in one day, you’ll likely be very overwhelmed. Making a room-by-room schedule will help keep you organized. Breaking up the work into different days makes the overall enormous task more manageable.

Clean as you pack, pack as you clean

Since you’re in the process of packing, planning, and organizing for your move, you can multi-task and get your cleaning done at the same time. Start in one corner of the room and start packing away the items you’ll be taking to your new home. Make a donation pile on the side for all of the things you decide to sell or donate. You can break down your cleaning tasks based on each section of the room and clean as you go. Once you’re done, you’ll feel accomplished knowing that the room is entirely packed, clean and ready – you won’t have to worry about it again.

Do the bulk of your spring cleaning before moving and a bit of it after moving.

Cleaning before your move will save you money and time on your moving day. If you clean thoroughly, you won’t have to hire a professional cleaning service or pay as much for their services because there will be less to do. The exact process you take to do your spring cleaning before moving can be applied after moving into your new home. Hopefully, your new home has already been cleaned before you move in. Still, you’ll also be able to clean it to your standards and notice any small details that may have gotten missed. As you unpack each room take one last chance to see whether there are more things you can donate or better ways you can organize your home.
