Movers Share Their Most Brilliant Packing Tips

These Tricks from Moving Companies Will Save You Time and Effort

Moving, whether it’s across the country or across the street, is an exciting time. It’s a chance to start fresh and begin a new chapter in your life. What’s less exciting is packing and organizing all of your belongings and getting them safely to your new home. Of course, hiring movers can make the process much more bearable, and moving companies know that most folks faced with packing will take all the extra help they can get.

There are many packing tips that we’ve all heard time and time again: pack items from the same room together, label all of your boxes and take extra care with breakables and perishables. These tips are useful, and much appreciated, but over the years moving companies have learned plenty of lesser known tips and tricks that make packing even easier. Luckily, they’re willing to share their knowledge.

1. Pack an overnight bag

Movers know from experience that after a long day of moving, the last thing people want to do is sort through box after box looking for a specific outfit or bottle of shampoo. Do yourself a favour and pack an overnight bag with all of the essential items you’ll need for the first night in your new home, including a change of clothes and toiletries.

2. Use clothing to wrap breakables

Most moving companies will tell you that you should be wrapping your fragile and breakable items to prevent them from breaking en route, but why not save on bubble wrap and use your clothing instead? For extra padding, you might even consider packing your glasses and stemware in clean socks. Not only is this a money saving tip, you’ll be killing two birds with one stone by packing both your clothing and breakables at once.

3. Avoid emptying your drawers

Dresser drawers are practically moving boxes, so don’t double your work by taking items out of the drawers and packing them. If you’re worried about the contents shifting, movers advise preventing this by covering them with cling wrap. This way, you won’t have to unpack and re-fold all of the contents, and moving your dressers will be much more manageable.

4. Take a photo of your electronics before you pack them

Remember how long it took you to properly hook up your big screen TV, or to get your surround sound working the way you wanted it to? To avoid this happening all over again, moving companies suggest taking photos of the way all your electronics are connected so you can remember how and where all of the wires go.

5. Keep small parts organized with sandwich bags

Moving companies know better than most that when moving, things need to be taken apart. This inevitably means having several small pieces to keep track of (and lose). Movers swear by sandwich bags to hold small parts like screws and other knick knacks. Label the bags and tape them to the back of the items they correspond to. This trick can also come in handy for cords and other electronic accessories.

Now, throw on your favourite playlist and get to packing! With these tips from moving companies, the experience will be easier than ever.
