Economic Moving Tips for an Affordable, Low-Cost Move
Moving tips for those on a tight budget or that want to save extra money on their move.
Moving costs can start to add up fast, especially if you go into the planning process without a set budget. We don’t always have the time or resources to save up for a move, and even if we do, there’s no harm in saving a few dollars where you can. Moving on a budget doesn’t have to be stressful; there are plenty of economical moving tips you can follow to help reduce your costs.
Start early
Perhaps one of the most important moving tips is always to start planning your move as soon as possible. Thorough planning is even more critical when you’re on a tight budget. As soon as you know that you’ll be moving, compile a list of everything you’ll need and where you’ll need to save money the most. When you give yourself time to prepare, you’ll have more time to research low-cost alternatives and shop around for the best quotes on movers and trucks.
Pick up second-hand moving supplies
Using second-hand moving supplies is both an ecological and economical moving tip. Brand new moving supplies are expensive and completely unnecessary. People are always offering up gently-used moving supplies on websites like Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji for free. You can also ask your local grocery store or restaurant if they have any extra boxes you could have. Leading up to your move, put aside any bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or newspaper from your mail to use for packing fragile items. If you can’t find second-hand supplies, shopping at a dollar store for packing tape and other small items can save you money.
Declutter
The less you have to pack up, organize, and transport means you can save money on packing materials, extra storage space, and additional labour. The more you have, the more expensive your move will be, especially when it comes to heavy or bulky items like furniture and instruments. Decluttering your home is a great way to downsize, and you can even make some extra cash by organizing a garage sale or yard sale.
Plan your moving day strategically
If you want to hire a moving company, you can save extra money by planning your move during their off-season (end of September to the end of April). Moving companies increase their rates during busier months because the demand is higher.
If you’re worried about missing work for your move, you may find it beneficial to plan your move for a weekend or a holiday when you’ll have time off already.
Ask for help
One of the best moving tips for saving money is to cash in some favours from family, friends, and colleagues. Someone may have a truck they’d be willing to let you use instead of renting a moving truck. You may also be able to rally enough people to help you on your moving day instead of hiring movers. Asking for help with physical labour, moving supplies and, other resources is a fantastic way to reduce your costs. Friends and family may also be able to help with babysitting or pet sitting, extra storage space, or a place to stay during your transition.
